About the post–

POST- recruitment are recruiting for a household name in retailing, this newly created position is to oversee all NPD activities within two specific categories.

This is an autonomous, exciting yet demanding role, that will utilise of your commercial, entrepreneurial and planning skills.

You'll need a real passion for product and the never ending chasing for the 'next best thing'.

You will be responsible for managing the NPD product; strategic product development and launches across all key NPD consumer goods categories. You will manage cradle to grave product and packaging creation, briefing, sourcing, manufacturing, negotiating and timely arrival of products for UK and International launches.

This business seeks innovation and best in class product. It will be essential to have a broad understanding of basic engineering / house-hold appliance functionality as well as a keen interest in any and all emerging technologies.

You will have category specific expertise of the small domestic appliance category, and preferably product development experience in additional and diverse categories. Using strong communication skills, you will influence the Operations Board to select new NPD products and be fully aware of consumer goods trends in key NPD product categories; Household, and Sports & Fitness.

You will also be responsible for managing a product team of varying levels of seniority and experience. Strong people management, mentoring and delegation skills will be required to achieve and exceed desired results, as well as helping the team to progress in their careers. As "Head of" you will also work closely with your counterparts in all other areas of the business to ensure communication, best practices and business efficiencies are maintained at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Senior Director to develop, implement and manage a category plan that is in line with business wide strategic plans.
  • Create and deliver an agreed product launch plan including hitting key agreed launches.
  • Full category and project management.
  • Development of innovative, unique intellectually protected product.
  • Market value, sales and competitor analysis and strategic planning for new products.
  • Briefing and working with Designers and Suppliers on product, packaging and photography.
  • Building and range presentation of product proposals and presentations for Board review and approval; outlining the project background and rationale, qualified with focused sales, market & trend analysis, clearly defining the size of the opportunity.
  • Building close working relationships with suppliers, agents and licensor's.
  • Liaising with suppliers, agents, licensor's and colleagues on sourcing, sampling, negotiating pricing to deliver target margins for all parties.
  • Working closely with technical team to evaluate performance of new products and suppliers.
  • Identifying consumer compelling product claims; working with technical and legal teams to robustly test and accurately quantify & qualify.
  • Management of critical path and all internal admin systems.
  • Maximising category profitability.
  • Attending key industry trade fairs, conferences and events.

What we need from you–

  • A minimum of 8 years knowledge and experience working in the Industry (specific expertise in small domestic appliances essential - additional diverse category knowledge preferred)
  • Demonstrable team leadership & management experience.
  • Contacts in the relevant Industry.
  • Consumer centric, sales, market and trend analyser.
  • Excellent commercial and creative experience in Product Development.
  • Ability to evidence strong commercial acumen coupled with a proven positive impact on sales.
  • Far East Product Development and Sourcing experience, including attendance of Far East sourcing fairs.
  • Experienced contracts, agreements and product price negotiator and influencer.
  • Proven track record of developing supply base and good supplier relationships.
  • Organised approach with strong analytical abilities.
  • Critical path management and planning experience.
  • Ability to personally manage and deliver key product projects, whilst managing a team each also working on multiple projects.
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced pressurised entrepreneurial business environment.
  • Risk assessor & problem solver.
  • Ability to keep calm and work logically through unexpected challenges.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a diverse range of people.
  • The flexibility to work unsociable hours, some late night/early morning conference calls and European/International travel.
